Surely you've seen the signs by now. “Fix My Streets! I Pay My Taxes,” they read. It's a shame it is an argument that has to be made, but it is one that is easily and often made. You see, 'round here, it's generally accepted as a "universal truth" that the Lake Area of New Orleans has the worst streets, perhaps even in the entire Gulf South. There's no dispute the streets need fixing. The part of the argument that needs exploring is the "I Pay My Taxes" part. Does that part of the argument hold as much water as the streets that need fixing? Let's explore that.

On July 12, 2014, LCIA met with representatives from Veoila Transportation and the Regional Transit Authority to discuss their plans to redevelop the existing Bus & Streetcar Terminals located at the intersection of Canal Blvd., City Park Avenue and Canal Street.

As you are probably aware we have been trying to get the City to grade the Lakeview alleys for a very long time. The issue always seemed to be that the alley grader was broken and there was no money to fix it. In our Lakeview Street Maintenance District proposal, we included the purchase of an alley grader, which would be exclusively used in Lakeview. This proposal was defeated at the polls by the residents and so no alley grading continued.

"The Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps at 17th Street, Orleans Avenue and London Avenue will provide a permanent and more sustainable measure for reducing the risk of a 100-year level storm surge entering the outfall canals. Preconstruction activities including surveying, soil sampling and test pile driving are or will be under way at all three canals in the next few weeks; major construction activities will begin in the fall.

In 2013, the City of New Orleans and evacuteer.org [external link] unveiled new artwork to mark the 17 designated City evacuation pick-up points where citizens may go during a mandatory evacuation. Our Lakeview EvacuSpot is located at the Smith Library Bus Stop at 6300 Canal Boulevard.
How Mandatory Evacuations Works
In the case of a dangerous or severe storm, generally Category 3 hurricane or higher, the City will call a mandatory evacuation. During a mandatory evacuation all citizens must leave the City of New Orleans until officials have designated the city safe for re-entry.

Burglary is usually a crime of opportunity. Burglars normally devote relatively little time to plan their actions. Therefore, the more obstacles that are in the way the less likely that the crime will occur.
Basic Home Target Hardening Techniques
- All exterior doors should be metal or solid wood (2 3/4" thick is preferred), and have strong door hinges on the inside of the door.
- Install impact resistant glass in any location within 42” of a door lock. This will make it more difficult to break the glass, reach in, and unlock the door.
- Properly install doorframes on all exterior doors and doors from attached garages so they cannot be spread apart.
- Install security type door strikes on all exterior doors.
- Install a peephole or wide-angle viewer in all entry doors so that you can see who is outside without opening the door.
